Canada Removes Tariffs on Most U.S. Imports

Nouvelles fiscales sept. 18, 2025

Effective September 1, 2025, Canada has removed the surtax applied as a countermeasure to most imports from the United States. However, 25% retaliatory tariffs on steel and aluminum (and related products) and automobiles imported from the United States remain in place, pending further negotiation between the two nations.

Impacted importers should review the complete list of U.S. products subject to counter tariffs on the Department of Finance Canada website to determine whether a specific imported good is subject to surtax. Note that previously listed items imported prior to September 1 remain subject to surtax. Furthermore, it is expected that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will continue compliance verification activities in respect of the surtax.

Further details on U.S. tariffs currently in place for Canadian goods and the remaining countermeasures imposed by Canada on U.S. imports, as well as exceptions and potential relief, can be found in our previously released tax development, Latest on Tariff Turmoil. For additional information on how to temper the impact of recent Canada–U.S. trade measures, please see Ryan’s article, Tempering Tariff Turmoil.
