At Ryan, our consultants work in a team environment. Teams typically consist of a Team Leader, Manager, or Director who leads two to four Senior Consultants and three to five Consultants. Managers delegate engagements to their staff based on workload, experience, and other criteria. Most engagements consist of one or two staff members working together with the Manager to achieve the desired results. At any time, team members can ask questions and learn from their teammates' experience.
Teams don't exist just to complete projects. Working in a team environment at Ryan offers tremendous opportunity for learning in a positive environment, sharing interests and ideas with others, and developing strong ties to coworkers. Our teams really function like families.
Because Ryan represents clients throughout North America and Europe, our employees are expected to travel. Our clients may have operations in large cities like Los Angeles, Boston, New York City, Toronto, or London, and in smaller communities throughout North America and Europe. It is impossible for us to predict who will travel where, but we can estimate that our tax consultants spend 30 to 35% of their time in the field at client sites.
Ryan's career path is similar to other consulting firms, but the opportunity for high performers to accelerate their career growth through the following positions is unmatched in the industry:
The Consultant position is an entry-level position into Ryan. Consultants typically are recent undergraduates and graduates from leading accounting and finance programs. Skills learned at this level provide the foundation for advanced state, local, federal, and international tax expertise.
The Senior Consultant position requires one to two years of tax experience. This experience can come from the Consultant position at Ryan, similar positions with other consulting firms, or from various government audit offices. Senior Consultants at Ryan have mastered basic taxation concepts and are developing strong supervisory skills.
Becoming a Team Leader is the first step in managing your own team at Ryan. Team Leaders have strong tax skills and are able to start building a team of tax consultants and managing client projects. As a Team Leader, an individual will typically lead two to four team members and begin to develop stronger management, supervisory, and negotiation skills.
Managers are typically responsible for managing teams of four to seven people and must have exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrated expertise, and an intense commitment to Ryan. Additionally, Managers have developed professional negotiating and presentation skills utilized regularly in meetings with representatives of taxing authorities.
Directors are typically responsible for managing teams ranging from four to twelve people. Directors are also responsible for marketing services to prospective clients and generally lead projects for our largest clients. Many of our Directors speak publicly at international, national, regional, and local tax conferences.
A Principal is responsible and accountable for each of our client engagements. Directors, Managers, and Team Leaders report to a Principal for each of their engagements. Principals develop the strategic vision of our Firm and are responsible for tactically executing our vision.
